Many people have the peculiar romantic notion that locksmiths learn their trade in a former profession – burglary. While it is true that locksmiths do need to think like thieves in order to do their job they actually learn all they know in training classes and on the job. Locksmiths need to be able to think like a thief in order to keep your home or business safe, but this usually comes with the job experience.
So, how exactly do you learn to be a locksmith? After making the decision to learn to be a locksmith it’s time to look into where to study the profession. In California and most other states, certificate or diploma locksmith training programs are offered by community colleges, vocational schools and state locksmith associations.
In these training courses student locksmiths learn how to properly pick a variety of locks, repair locks in residential and commercial buildings, make and duplicate keys, understand the mechanics of locks and test security of locks after installation. There are also courses in different types of locksmithing – for example, for different kinds of cars and motorcycles. Students also learn about the business aspects of the profession.
Duration of these courses depends on the student and what type of locksmithing they are interested in working in and the complexity of the work.
Most locksmiths continue training throughout their careers to make sure that they remain up to date with new developments and changing standards in the profession.
The two main locksmith schools in California are:
California Institute of Locksmithing and the School of Security Technology.
An alternative way to learn locksmithing is by taking an apprenticeship with an experienced locksmith. The trainee will learn the technical and business aspects of the profession by working with professionals.
The Associated Locksmiths of America offers different levels of locksmith certification:
Registered Locksmith (RL), Certified Registered Locksmith (CRL), Certified Professional Locksmith (CPL) and Certified Master Locksmith (CML).
To receive these certifications students must pass an exam with a score of at least 70%.
Locksmiths working in California are issued licenses by the State of California’s Department of Consumer Affairs, through the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS), who also regulates the locksmith industry. There are two types of licenses, one for business owners and one for employees. Every locksmith that works with customers has to be licensed.

If you ever thought that becoming a professional locksmith is as simple as taking a walk on the beach, you are probably unfamiliar with the necessary requirements and training one has to meet in order to become a certified locksmith. In the USA, getting a locksmith certification in order to provide locksmith services is mandatory in about 20 states, and the Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA) organization provides the proper training programs to those who are interested in this kind of profession.
More Than One Option
There are two ways of becoming a certified locksmith. The first is by attending a class and completing theoretical courses. The second is by completing an internship at an experienced and professional locksmith service provider.
In order to be accepted to either one of the options, one has to have a high school diploma or a GED. There are several schools in America that include theoretical and practical training in their classes, and it is also important to mention that choosing the internship option can also combine theoretical knowledge, along with the main practical aspects of the practice. In addition to those two frames of training, the proper schools and selected employers also provide specific workshops and external seminars which include more advanced materials in the field of high end locksmith and security. ALOA also offers workshop courses online, which also offer advanced training to more accomplished locksmiths.
If you choose the formal training option by attending the mandatory classes and courses, you will also have to pass a final exam. Upon successfully passing this final exam you will receive the certification you strived for and officially become a certified locksmith.
Those who feel confident about the theory can choose to skip the formal classes, take the test, and receive the ALOA professional locksmith certification. Regarding the required experience, those who choose to directly take the test must have 1-5 years of previous experience which can be acquired during an internship at a senior locksmith employer.
What Do You Stand to Gain?
Besides the vast technical knowledge you naturally gain a profession and the opportunity to build a successful career. Since locks and keys are to be found pretty much everywhere in modern life, professional locksmith services and solutions are always in demand.
Now, it’s up to you to decide!
Did you ever try to open your safe, dialing your lock’s combination, and it would not open up? You rack your brain, you can swear that you are not confusing the combination’s code numbers. It is the date of your marriage anniversary, your kid’s birthday, or any other significant date in your life that you will never forget. This can cause great frustration but there is no need to lose hope! It may be a simple matter of applying the combination not accurately enough.
How is it done correctly?
The common safe lock is a 3 wheel lock. That means that it requires a three numbers combination in order to open. Here is how it is done:
- Step 1: First, turn the dial left all the way through, passing 0 for 4 times and stopping at the precise first number of your combination on the fourth time.
- Step 2: After finishing the former step, turn the dial 3 times but this time to the right and stop after the third time as the second number of your code lines up with the opening indicator. Here too you have to be exact.
- Step 3: Now turn the dial 2 times to the left again and stop as the third number of your code lines up with the opening indicator.
- Step 4: Turn the dial to the right until you feel it stop as 95 roughly lines up with the opening indicator, and voila! The safe is open!
Please note- missing the mark on any of the code’s numbers even by a little bit will cause the lock to remain locked.
Got it! How do I lock the safe again?
This step is simple, just turn the dial to any direction 4 times all the way through but make sure that you do not stop at any one of your combination code’s numbers.
Accuracy is the key
If you reach step 4 and the dial would not stop at 95, you were probably less than accurate during the opening process and you should therefore repeat it all over again, this time with a little more accuracy…
Follow the steps again; Make sure that as you dial the combination’s numbers you stop at the exact number. Otherwise, the safe will not open.
Wishing you good luck!
